A domain name is as important as a phone number for any active business. In today’s economy more and more people are finding businesses by their domain name rather than by looking up their phone number in a telephone book. Selecting and maintaining the right domain name is crucial.

IGD Solutions Corporation is registered as a wholesale registrar with Network Solutions.  We can register and/or renew a customer’s domain on their behalf and we can manage that registration for our customers on an ongoing basis.  We are flexible in that we can use our registrar services or we can use any registrar a customer chooses.  We recommend using our Network Solutions wholesale account for your domain name needs because they are the oldest and most trusted registrar.  We will insure that your domain name is never lost and always renewed on a timely basis.  While Network Solutions does not have the absolute lowest pricing available, a company will never lose a domain name because of an issue with the registrar.  If a company ever lost their domain name, it would cost more than the few dollars they saved by going with a different registrar.

Typically when choosing a domain name, we recommend the following guidelines be followed:

 
  • The shorter the name the better. It may be hard to find a short name with many domain names being taken. Length is not crucial, but don’t make the domain name unnecessarily long.
  • Don’t abbreviate words. Longer names are better than abbreviations.
  • Don’t use dashes. Users get confused on what to put for a dash. Is it a slash? etc.
  • .com is still the best choice, but you may have to look elsewhere for a good name.
  • If you don’t choose .com make sure you check to see what the .com equivalent has listed in case your visitors mistype your name with a .com extension. Will they be confused?
  • Buy common misspellings of your domain name.
  • If you are buying a .org domain name, buy the .com equivalent also.

Once you have purchased a domain name, you can develop a website for that domain name (something simple or something advanced, depending on your business) and/or you can send and receive Email using that domain name.
